Gertrude A. Urban

Anton B. Urban Funeral Home

Gertrude A. Urban, "Trudy," a cherished member of the Ambler community, peacefully passed away at the age of 92 on January 28, 2024. She was born on September 27, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA, and was the loving daughter of the late Anthony and Magdalena (nee Stahl) Matje. She graduated from St. Peter's Elementary School, John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in 1949, Drexel University in 1953 with a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics, and Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia in 1962.

She married Anton B. Urban in 1952 and celebrated 36 years of marriage before his sudden death in 1988. Trudy and Anton worked side by side, operating the family business, Anton B. Urban Funeral Home in Philadelphia and Ambler, with great passion and expertise. Gertrude's compassionate nature and commitment to providing comfort and support to grieving families made her a beloved figure in the community. Peter "Skip" Urban entered the family business in 1980 and, with Trudy's assistance, continued assisting families until her retirement in 2018.

Trudy was an active part of the community, serving on the Board of the former Visiting Nurses Association of Ambler, the Lioness Club of Ambler, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She served as the President of the St. Alphonsus Senior Citizens, where she was a willing traveler on bus trips to area resorts or simply a trip to the casino. For the past 60 years, Trudy has been a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church and daily communicant, serving in every position of the Ladies Guild, organizing the Pinochle card players, and playing Bridge with the same group of women for over 50 years. Trudy loved to play cards, and there were days when she would play with three different groups on the same day. Trudy volunteered with the Ambler Ambulance Association as a dispatcher and ran the Membership Campaign for many years. Trudy was an excellent cook and baker in the old-school Bavarian ways; at Christmas time, mounds of cookies would be distributed to friends and business associates.

Trudy was preceded in death by her husband, Anton B. Urban, in 1988 and her son, Anton "Sonny" Urban, in 2023. She is survived by her devoted son Peter "Skip" Urban and his wife Dolores of Ambler, and her daughter-in-law Bonnie J. Urban of New Cumberland, PA. Her cherished grandchildren will deeply miss Trudy's loving presence: Anton and Jessica Urban, Jacalyn and Olivier Jammaers, Peter and Kelly Urban, and Andrew Urban and his fiancee Rebecca Marinucci. Additionally, she leaves behind her beloved great-grandchildren: Ainsley and Avery Urban, Elodie, Alexander, and Sophie Jammaers, and Meredith and Peter Urban, III.
