Mark Gerald Evans, 75, of Old Forge, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family and friends on Friday morning, October 31st. He is survived by his wife, Gerri Munley Evans.
Born in Carbondale, he was the eldest child of the late Mark and Jane McMyne Evans. He married his high school sweetheart, Gerri, in 1972 and raised a loving family for 53 years. He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Minooka, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. Mark was a graduate of Saint Rose High School, Carbondale, the University of Scranton, and the Simmons Institute of Funeral Service, Syracuse, NY. He became a successful funeral director, receiving his license in 1998, and working closely with the Brennan Funeral Homes in Carbondale and Forest City and the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale. He was previously employed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as a clerk for the Unemployment Compensation Office and as a corrections officer for SCI Waymart. He was also the owner/operator of Mark 1 Video Rental, Waymart.
Mark’s greatest accomplishment was ensuring that his wife, children, and grandchildren knew that they had his unconditional love and how proud he was of all of them. Mark found great pleasure in working outside around the house, enjoying a cigar, and tending to his collection of trains. He had a gift for telling stories and loved being surrounded by family and friends to share them. In his retirement, he worked with several funeral homes, transporting the departed home to their families. He volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and many other organizations.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Father Paul and Joe Donovan for their continued blessings and daily communion in his final days; to his oncologist Lisa Thomas and staff; to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, especially to nurse Shannon for compassionately guiding him home to his final resting place; to gracious neighbors for their support and prayers; and to the Brennans for their patience and lifelong friendship.
Mark will be remembered for the full life he led, the stories he had to tell about it, and singing “Joy to the World” no matter what time of year it was. I love you, God Bless You, and Goodnight.
Also surviving are his children: Mark Evans; Jennifer Mariotti and husband Eugene; seven grandchildren: Nicholas Evans; Matthew Mariotti; Patrick Mariotti; Daniel Evans; Gracie Mariotti; Molly Evans; and Bella Evans; two brothers: Jerry Evans and wife Rose; Michael Evans; a loving sister-in-law: Cindy Munley; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by a son: Baby M.G. Evans; brothers and sisters-in-law: Barry and Rose Marie Cornell; James and Marcille Barbour; Mark and JoAnne Chambers; and Joseph Munley.
The funeral will be Wednesday November 12th with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St., Moosic. Friends may call Wednesday at the church from 9 am until mass time. Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.
